A Muslim must have Iman. Iman means to have firm belief in:
* The Oneness of the Allah. He Alone is the Creator, Sustainer and Lord over everything, and He Alone is worthy or worship.
"Say: `Who is it in Whose hands is the governance of all things - Who protects (all), but is not protected (by any)? (Say) if you know.' They will say, `[It belongs] to Allah,' Say: `Then how are you deluded?'." [The Holy Qur'an 23:88-89]
* The Creator's Angels. Allah created them from light, and they obey Him. They have been assigned various tasks which they carry out faithfully. Some of them were given the task of carrying the Message to the Prophets. Others are assigned to record the good and bad actions of human beings. the number of angels is known only to Allah, but there are ten who are well-known to us. They are:
- Jibril, who conveys Allah's messages to His prophets
- Mikail, who is entrusted with rain and sustenance
- Israfil, who will sound the trumpet on the Day of Judgement
- Izrail, who takes the soul of living things
- Munkar, who question Man in his grave
- Nakir, who question Man in his grave
- Raqib, who will record all good deeds of Man
- Atid, who will record all evil deeds of Man
- Malik, the Guardian of Hell
- Ridhuan, the Guardian of Paradise
“[they, i.e., angels] disobey not, (from executing) the Commands they receive from Allaah, but do that which they are commanded." [The Holy Qur'an 66:6]
"And We made the angels (the Universal Forces) subservient to you."
“Those (angels) who bear the Throne (of Allaah) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allaah)…” [The Holy Qur'an 40:7]
* All the Prophets and Messengers (alaihim assalam - meaning; may peace be upon them) from the first Prophet Adam (alaihis salam) through to Muhammad (sallAllahu alayihi wa salam), the Last Prophet. These include Adam, Idris (Enoch), Nuh (Noah), Hud, Salih (Salih), Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma'il (Ishmael), Ishaq (Isaac), Ya'qub (Jacob), Lut (Lot), Yusuf (Joseph), Ayuub (Job), Dhil-Kifl (Ezekiel), Yunus (Jonah), Musa (Moses), Harun (Aaron), Ilyasa (Elisha), Ilyas (Elijah), Dawud (David), Sulaiman (Solomon), Zakaryia (Zechariah), Yahya (John), Isa (Jesus), alaihim assalam, and Muhammad (salla Allahu alayihi wasalam), as well as the over 124,000 others whose names have not been revealed. They were His Messengers on this earth and were responsible for teaching Islam to their people. They came to teach people to do good, and lived their lives according to what they preached. A muslim must believe in all Prophets and give them due respect, but they should not be worshipped.
* All the Divine Scriptures, including the Books of Ibrahim (Abraham, alaihis salam), the Torah revealed to Musa (Moses, alaihis salam), the Injeel revealed to 'Isa (Jesus, alaihis salam), the Scriptures of Dawud (David, alaihis salam) and all other Divine Scriptures. These Books contain the guidance of Allah for mankind. The Noble Qur'an is the Book relvealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Some people who were disobedient to Allah have distored some of these books to mislead people. Allah has protected the Noble Qur'an from any kind of distortion. "This is indeed an honourable recital. In a Book well guarded." [The Holy Qur'an 56: 77, 78]
"He hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel" [The Holy Qur'an 3:3]
* Life After Death. A muslim has to belive that life in this world will come to an end one day. Everything in this world wil perish. Then Allah will bring all human back to life on the Day of Judgement or Day of Reckoning, when all human beings will be evaluated based on their own deeds. They will be either be rewarded a place in Paradise for obeying Allah and spending their lives doing good or they will be punished for their bad deeds and placed in Hellfire.
"Say: `It is Allah Who gives you life, then gives you death; then He will gather you together for the Day of Judgement about which there is no doubt': but most men do not understand." [The Holy Qur'an 45:26]
"Did you then think that We had created you in jest, and that you would not be brought back to Us (for accoun)?" [The Holy Qur'an 23:115]
"Blessed is He in Whose hands is Dominion; and He over all things has Power - He Who created Death and Life, that He may try which of you is best in deed; and He is the Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving." [The Holy Qur'an 67:1-2]
"That Day will every soul be requited for what it earned; no injustice will there be that Day, for Allah is Swift in taking account." [The Holy Qur'an 40:17]
"Then shall anyone who has done an atom's weight of good, see it! And anyone who has done an atom's weight of evil, shall see it." [The Holy Qur'an 99:7-8]
"We shall set up scales of justice for the day of Judgement, so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least. And if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account." [The Holy Qur'an 21:47]
"Whoever works righteousness, man or woman, and has Faith, verily, to him will We give a new Life, and life that is good and pure, and We will bestow on such their reward according to the best of their actions." [The Holy Qur'an 16:97]
* Al-Qadar. Al-Qadar is the understanding that some facets of our lives have been pre-destined by Allah. These include the existence of all creatures, the length of a person's life span, and the amount of provision (or wealth) they will receive. Although Allah has the Supreme authority, He has granted man, His Vicegerent (deputy) use of a limited authority in exercising discretion and making choices. Since accountability presupposes authority, Allah equipped man with all the necessary and appropriate faculties to understand and exercise judgement. Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala), out of His Mercy, revealed additional guidance through His chosen Prophets (alaihim assalam) to explain the rewards and the consequences of his deeds. It is up to man to make or mar his own future.
"It is not fitting for a Believer, man or woman, when a matter has been decided by Allah and His Messenger, to have any option about their decision: if anyone disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he is indeed on a clearly wrong Path." [The Holy Qur'an 33:36]
"And hold fast, All of you together to the Rope of Allah." [The Holy Qur'an 3:103]
"Those who patiently persevere will truly receive a reward without measure!" [The Holy Qur'an 39:10]
